Scores

My compositions, over many years. I have composed for a number of ensembles and instruments. Many of these were composed for a specific performer/group. Please use the scores as uploaded here for reference only, if you are interested in performing any of these pieces, please let me know. All of them have many supporting materials, parts, etc.

1809: A piece for voice and electronics. It is an exercise in composing for spoken word and sung verse in a foreign language, in this case Icelandic. Instead of attempting to create a coherently written Icelandic libretto, I used markovian text generation to generate a new, five chapter Icelandic folk tale. All of the rest of the composition is informed not by translating the piece but by listening to the cues in the rhythm and pitch of the voice, alongside some general ideas of character development and setting. The electronics for the piece are a bowed string algorithm, based on Perry Cook’s model, and 8-channel spatialization of five sets of abstracted, related sound samples.

The controllers for the piece are two multitouch trackpads. I built a tray to adapt two Apple Magic Trackpads to this purpose, which you can find here.

The Max/MSP patch for the piece, and necessary sound files, can be found here. It requires fingerpinger, a Max external that is bundled along with the above package. Thanks to Michael and Max Egger for their working developing this external.

A recording of this piece can be found on my Soundcloud. Also, a recording of a native Icelandic speaker reading the piece slowly and quickly.

Mapping: for Improvising Ensemble: A piece for improvising ensemble of any number (preferably 7 or more). The piece assigns each player a number from 1-7, and designates a cueing player. From here, the players are arranged in several subgroups, and at times asked to solo or play fully together. A recording of this piece can be found on my Soundcloud.

Program: Etudé for Modern Musicians: A piece for alto flute, baritone saxophone, shortwave radio and computer. This PDF includes the main score and the parts. The computer is unmanned, and the radio reads directly from the score. A recording can be found on my Soundcloud.

Ternary for Brass Quintet: A piece for two Bb trumpets, horn, trombone, tuba, in ternary (ABA) form. The score is transposing, and all instruments read form it directly. A recording can be found on my Soundcloud.

Open: A piece for string quartet, making heavy usage on pizzicato strumming and open string techniques. A recording can be found on my Soundcloud.

Program II: Etudé in Dissonance: A piece for Bb Clarinet, Bassoon, Trombone, Violin and Contrabass. It relies on difficult fluttertonguing techniques from the basson and clarinet, and a large chord from all the instruments. A very small piece. A recording can be found on my Soundcloud.
