My Shruti box, made from the reeds of a discarded wind organ from the 70’s. It is largely aluminum, housed in an old slide to photo adapter from Macy’s. It was a nice, quick and dirty project, but tuning the reeds and getting all the air flow and correct fan power was a trial.
The box has a nice dense cluster of notes, several of which are doubled to allow a nice beating/phaser pattern. I made the box to serve as a backing drone, something I could simply plug in and play over without any setup, wires, mics, computers etc. It’s also nice, when setting up mics in another room or in a remote location to have a sound I can simply plug in and let run while I run around and check levels on my mics.
Listen to a sound sample of it over on Soundcloud.
